1947 Woodward Tornado, Oklahoma, Images of America, Paperback The 1947 Woodward Tornado remains the deadliest tornado in Oklahoma history, leaving more than 100 people dead and nearly 1,000 seriously injured. The tornado struck the city of Woodward under cover of darkness and without warning at 8:42 p.m. on April 9, 1947. The storm left in its wake hundreds of stories of tragic loss, devastation, and even mysteries that remain unsolved. These include the three unidentified girls–one as young as six months–whose bodies have remained unclaimed, as well as the mystery of what happened to Joan Gay Croft, a girl who disappeared from the local hospital on the night of the storm. Croft’s disappearance was featured in an episode of the television show Unsolved Mysteries in the early 1990s. There is also the oft-overlooked story of those who took up residence (some for more than a year) in “Tornado Town” west of the city and found some glimmer of hope in an otherwise hopeless situation.

Southern California Surf Music, 1960-1966, California, Images of America, Paperb Dick Dale & the Del-Tones began holding weekend dances at the Rendezvous Ballroom in Balboa, California, in the summer of 1960. Over the next year and a half, Dale developed the sound and style that came to be known as “surf music.” The result was the development of more powerful guitar amplifiers, a dramatic increase in the sales of Fender guitars and amplifiers, and a shift from New York to West Coast recording studios. More and more people were drawn to the sport of surfing, which became an important part of teen beach culture at the time. Even landlocked teenagers were captured by the moment, carrying surfboards atop their woodies in Phoenix or bleaching their hair blonde in St. Paul. For hundreds of thousands of kids, though, the attraction was not the connection to surfing; it was the connection to the music pioneered by Dick Dale.

Hinsdale Through the 200-plus photographs and informative captions, this visual history by local author Sandra Bennett Williams seeks to remind residents of Hinsdale’s charming past.In 1858, the town of Fullersburg, centered at what is now York Road and Ogden Avenue, petitioned the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad to develop a western route that would pass through their community. The track was eventually built, but finding the topography at Fullersburg unsuitable, the route curved one mile to the south through vacant prairie. Enterprising entrepreneur William Robbins seized this opportunity, purchasing land along the new route and creating a community: Hinsdale. Designed to be a commuter suburb, Hinsdale’s clean air, safe streets, and large lots have made it the perfect choice for Chicago business leaders since its beginning. It remains without industry, reflecting the comfortable well-being of its residents.

Keller, Texas, Images of America, Paperback In the late 1800s, pioneers settled in the northeast Texas region of Cross Timbers known as Double Springs. In 1875, Isaac Roberts, a farmer who owned more than 600 acres, left a parcel of his land to A. G. Roberts, who then sold the right-of-way to the Texas and Pacific Railway for $25. A new town was formed, and in 1882, it was named Keller in honor of the railroad foreman who was instrumental in making the area a regular stop along the railroad. With the railroad bringing new visitors and residents, a post office was created in 1888, and new businesses started forming. The Works Progress Administration provided jobs for many Keller residents during the Great Depression, and the results of those projects shaped the way the city looks today. As of 2010, Old Town Keller was undergoing a new phase of revitalization while maintaining its connection to the hardy pioneers that once called Keller home.
